THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

A Trivial Comedy for Serious People
By Oscar Wilde | Directed by Prof. Jenifer Dobby

VIRTUAL General Auditions + CALLBACKS
MONDAY, 12/6 from 5:00-9:00pm

NOTE: There will no longer be required video monologue auditions. VIRTUAL General Auditions will be held Monday, 12/6 from 5-7pm VIA TEAMS. Callbacks from 7-9pm VIA TEAMS.

Actors will be invited to a EARNEST Audition Canvas Course, through which all auditions will be held virtually.  If you did not receive an invitation to Canvas, or an email about this change from Prof. Dobby, reach out to her ASAP!  [email protected].

1) Sign up for a General Audition slot outside the Otteson Theatre Office by Monday, 12/6 at 10:00am.
You will be partnered with another student to read a side (part of a scene) from EARNEST as your general audition between 5:00-7:00pm, and Callbacks will happen that same night from 7:00-9:00pm.

2) READ THE ENTIRE PLAY!
Script can be found for free online. Scenes for the general auditions are posted below - there are 3 sides, each separated by a blank page.  Groups will read the below sides at general auditions - be sure to prepare all of them, and all roles in each side!

Callbacks

 • Callbacks will be held VIRTUALLY via the Audition Canvas Course on Monday, December 6 from 7-9pm.
• You will be notified via Canvas Announcement if you've received a callback via  by 7:10pm on Monday, 12/6.
• Callback sides will be provided during callbacks in Canvas/Files or in Canvas/Module.

Additional Information

•  If you have conflicts with any aspect of the Audition time (5:00-9:00pm on Monday,) let Prof. Dobby know ASAP at [email protected]!

•  All students cast can earn 1cr of THE100.

•  All Carroll University students are welcome to audition.

•  Traditional gender roles may be swapped in this production - we may utilize the historically accurate and popular DAME ROLE (when a man plays a traditional 'female role') and BREECHES ROLE (when a woman plays a traditional 'male role.')

•  Note that we're holding auditions this Fall for the Spring (I generally do this for my productions that I direct) since we're going to have a short 7-week timeline for the production when we return in January.  And, as many of the EARNEST costumes will be built vs. purchased, we need casting finalized ASAP to get costumes designed and fittings/building started before we leave for Winter Break!

•  Big reminder to read the entire hilarious play prior to auditions.  It's widely available for free online.

•  Rehearsals this Spring will start Tuesday, 1/18.  We will rehearse Mon-Thurs 6:00-9:00pm, and some Fridays 4:00-6:00pm.  Tech week and Performance Week will be Sun-Thursday 6:00-10:00pm, with performances Friday and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm.

•  The entire EARNEST Company may be required to have multiple COVID-19 tests each week, regardless of vaccination status.  If Prof. Laura Gray is cast in the production, we will follow Actors' Equity Association's (AEA) guidelines for productions, which require self-nasal swab tests multiple times per week.

•   There are opportunities in the areas of stage management, scene shop, costume shop, props, lighting, sound and crew involved with this production. If interested, reach out to Production and Scene Shop Manager Justin Gale at [email protected].
